Classic rules, smarter opponents
What Is Hearts?
Hearts is a four-player trick-taking card game in which the goal is to finish with the lowest score. Every heart is worth 1 point, and the Queen of Spades is worth 13 points. Other cards have no point value.
The game became especially well known through early versions of Microsoft Windows. This browser version keeps the familiar rules while adding computer opponents with several difficulty levels.
Quick guide
How to Play Hearts
Pass three cards
At the start of most hands, choose three cards and pass them to another player.
Lead with 2♣
The player holding the Two of Clubs starts the first trick by playing that card.
Follow suit
You must play the led suit when possible. Otherwise, you may discard another legal card.
Avoid points
Try not to take hearts or the Queen of Spades. The lowest total score wins the game.

- Each heart: 1 point
- Queen of Spades: 13 points

Hearts Strategy Tips
Pass dangerous high cards
High hearts and high spades can force you to take penalty points. Passing them is often the safest choice.
Create a void suit
Try to remove all cards from one suit. Later, when that suit is led, you can discard a dangerous card.
Track the Queen of Spades
Keep enough low spades to protect yourself, and avoid winning a spade trick when the queen may still be in play.
Watch the first trick
Under standard rules, point cards cannot be discarded on the first trick unless no legal alternative exists.
